$44M Crypto Heist: CoinDCX Employee Arrested

Indian authorities have arrested Rahul Agarwal, a CoinDCX software engineer, in connection with a $44 million cryptocurrency theft. The arrest follows a complaint filed by CoinDCX’s parent company, Neblio Technologies, after discovering compromised login credentials on Agarwal’s work laptop. The breach, which occurred on July 19th, saw $44 million in USDT transferred from an internal CoinDCX operational account to six unknown wallets. While CoinDCX CEO Sumit Gupta assures user funds were unaffected, the incident highlights a sophisticated social engineering attack. Police investigations suggest Agarwal, employed by CoinDCX for three years, was unknowingly exploited. He allegedly confessed to using his office laptop for a part-time job, violating company policy, and earning approximately $17,135 from this secondary work. Authorities believe he received instructions via WhatsApp from a German number, potentially a bait to gain access to the exchange’s systems. Although Agarwal claims unawareness of the scam, he was arrested and remanded to judicial custody. The investigation continues, focusing on the perpetrators who leveraged Agarwal’s compromised credentials to execute the heist. The case underscores the vulnerabilities of even large exchanges to sophisticated social engineering tactics and the importance of robust security protocols.

This incident highlights the ongoing security vulnerabilities that continue to plague crypto monetary systems and digital asset exchanges worldwide.
