Cathie Wood, CEO of ARK Invest, is renowned as one of the most fervent proponents of the cryptocurrency sector. While acknowledging the value of the broader Ethereum ecosystem, her strongest conviction remains firmly with Bitcoin, a consistent theme throughout her analyses over the years.
Wood defines Bitcoin as the “pure cryptocurrency” and a global monetary system based on quantitative rules. Speaking on The Master Investor podcast, she emphasized Bitcoin’s unique security, noting that its Layer-1 blockchain has never been hacked, a distinction she believes sets it apart from all other networks. She confidently stated, “Bitcoin dominates the cryptocurrency space when it comes to pure crypto. We think it will be by far the largest.” ARK Invest’s commitment is evident through its ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF (ARKB), which currently holds 43,799 BTC, valued at approximately $4.91 billion. Wood maintains an ambitious forecast, predicting Bitcoin could reach $1.5 million by 2030.
Despite her preference for Bitcoin, Wood recognizes Ethereum’s significant role in decentralized finance (DeFi). However, she expressed concerns that Ethereum’s dominant position might be challenged as Layer-2 solutions, such as Coinbase’s Base, attract more activity and fee shares. She has praised Ethereum’s transition to zero-knowledge proof (ZK) scaling techniques for their potential in scalability and privacy, even if she doesn’t fully grasp all technical specifics. ARK Invest also holds exposure to Ethereum, notably through Bitmine Immersion.
Beyond these two giants, Wood remains selective, generally distrusting most tokens on the market. She identifies Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana as the “big three” expected to dominate long-term. She also mentioned promising protocols like Uniswap and Hyperliquid, comparing the latter’s potential to early Solana. While acknowledging the importance of stablecoins, she differentiates them from leading cryptocurrencies. Her investment strategy, reflected in ARK Invest’s substantial holdings, underscores her belief in a concentrated portfolio of foundational crypto assets.
