Crypto Adoption Stagnant: Most Americans Uncomfortable, Survey Shows
A recent Gallup survey reveals that cryptocurrency remains largely unfamiliar and unwanted among most Americans. Only about 14% of US adults currently own Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies, with a mere 4% planning to buy in the near future. A significant 60% express no interest in ever purchasing crypto. This lack of interest isn’t solely due to unfamiliarity; although 95% have heard of crypto, only 35% claim to know anything about it. The perception of risk is a major deterrent, with 55% considering crypto “very risky,” a figure that rises to 72% among those with no interest in buying. Interestingly, even among current owners, 42% view crypto as very risky. Demographic trends highlight a skewed ownership pattern. Men under 50, college graduates, and higher-income individuals show higher ownership rates (25%, 19%, and 19% respectively), while older women, lower-income earners, and seniors exhibit significantly lower rates. Political affiliation also plays a role, with Democrats and liberals expressing higher levels of risk aversion toward crypto compared to Republicans and conservatives. Despite the GENIUS Act aiming to bring regulatory clarity, only 4% of adults see crypto as a worthwhile long-term investment, compared to the 60% who own stocks or real estate. Among investors (those with $10,000 or more in stocks, bonds, or mutual funds), ownership has increased from 2% in 2018 to 17% currently, but a substantial majority (64%) still have no intention of investing in crypto. The survey suggests that broader crypto adoption hinges on increased regulatory clarity, improved safety nets, and demonstrably strong returns.
