Ethereum Price to Explode? Demand Soars 32x Past Supply
A recent surge in Ethereum (ETH) demand, primarily driven by institutional investors, is causing a significant price increase. Bitwise Asset Management’s CIO, Matt Hougan, highlights that since mid-May, the combined buying pressure from ETFs and corporations has exceeded new ETH issuance by a staggering 32 times. This has led to a remarkable 65% price increase in the past month and a 160% surge since April. The influx of capital comes from various sources, with ETFs alone attracting over $5 billion since mid-May. Corporations, including Bitmine, SharpLink Gaming, Bit Digital, and The Ether Machine, are accumulating ETH for their treasuries, adopting it as a strategic asset. Bitmine’s ambitious goal is to acquire 5% of the total ETH supply. This institutional adoption isn’t merely speculative; these companies are publicly outlining long-term strategies, indicating a structural shift in market sentiment. Hougan points out that the relatively low percentage of ETH in ETFs compared to Bitcoin ETFs suggests significant room for growth. The current premium on the stock valuations of ETH treasury companies further incentivizes accumulation. Bitwise projects that another $20 billion in ETH could be purchased by these entities in the next year, dwarfing the expected new supply. While Ethereum lacks Bitcoin’s hard cap, the immediate price action is heavily influenced by supply and demand, suggesting the upward trend could continue. However, the long-term sustainability of this trend remains to be seen.
This unprecedented demand surge highlights how ethereum monetary systems are evolving to handle increased institutional adoption and user activity.
